Just a Word of Caution to Dog Walkers and Parents with Children Living on the Silver Lake Institute:

There are a few areas where extreme caution is needed with regard to stop signs located on the Silver Lake Institute.  And although the problem is worse in the winter, caution should be exercised year-round when walking, biking, or driving on Institute grounds.

There is a 4-way stop sign at Perry and Wesley, where the Silver Lake Post Office is located, and drivers seem to have a tendency to "coast" or outright blow through this stop sign driving down Perry Avenue.  Occasionally, the deputy sheriff sits at the stop and monitors the situation, but that is sporadic.   police

The 4-way stop at Perry and Genesee is another area to be careful, as cars driving along Perry will many times blow right through this stop.

One area that concerns me greatly is the three way stop at the bottom of Wesley Avenue where it dead-ends into Lakeview Avenue.  Many times, drivers on Lakeview Avenue totally disregard the stop signs completely.  Granted, in the winter, traffic is sparse and "coasting" through the signs while driving on Lakeview and crossing Wesley is not a major safety issue, but sometimes I have observed drivers blowing through these at a high rate of speed.  Odds are that a walker on Wesley or Lakeview will have time to react, but a biker coming down Wesley could be seriously injured (This would be true for all of the side streets that dead-end into Lakeview Avenue).  More troubling to me, however, is that the Institute maintenance man who drives the snow plow in the winter comes down Wesley Avenue at a very high rate of speed and continues on across Lakeview without stopping as he pushes the snow down Wesley, across Lakeview, and onto the Forever Green lawn area.  Someone walking a dog down Lakeview Avenue (we have several year-round dog walkers), kids playing outside (like mine, and I live practically on the corner of Lakeview and Wesley), or one of our many "coasters" through the stop signs as they drive along Lakeview Avenue, may someday get T-Boned by the plow.  And at the speeds I've observed the plow coming down Wesley, the ending will not be pretty.

Be safe out there, and watch out for those less responsible than yourself.  Roll Eyes
